Strike a possibility in EAC dispute

Relevant News

With an overwhelming majority – over 90% – the personnel of EAC gives the green light to the unions and authorizes their leadership for further handling of the issues that concern them.

Following this development, the possibility of taking strike measures in EAC is not excluded, in case the demands of the unions do not find a response from the government side and the management of the organization.

Specifically, since Monday, local gatherings of EAC personnel are taking place, which are called upon by secret ballot to authorize the leadership of the unions on the matter.

The president of SEPAEK, Sotos Savva stated that according to the results so far, the personnel of EAC are in favor of their unions and give them the freedom to proceed with the process, with a percentage of 94%.

This percentage, according to Mr. Savva, concerns the results of the SEPAEKvotes, however, it is not expected to differ significantly from the results of the other unions of the organization – the votes of the unions are separate.

Specifically, until today, the votes have been held in Limassol and Vasilikos Power Station (Monday), Paphos (Tuesday), and at the central offices of EAC (today).

On Friday, votes will follow in Nicosia, Kyperounta, and Plati, and next Monday those in Larnaca, Paralimni, and the Dhekelia Power Station.

However, based on the results so far, Mr. Savva told us that the support of the personnel towards their unions is considered given.

Asked whether we should expect the taking of strike measures in EAC, Mr. Savva replied that the primary goal is to exhaust the dialogue with the Ministry of Energy and the other involved ministries, as they want measures to be taken and the issues that concern them to be resolved, however, as he said, this should be done in a short timeframe.
