Storms ravage crops in Kokkinochoria

Relevant News

Farmers in the Kokkinochoria region have been left counting the costs after a severe weather event, involving hail and torrential rains, devastated the area on Monday night.

The agriculture community, particularly potato growers, have been hit hard, with the worst of the damages reported in the Xylofagou and Frenaros regions.

Andreas Karyos, a spokesperson for the potato producers, told philenews that early potato crops in Xylofagou suffered significant losses, and a smaller area in Frenaros also experienced destruction.

In addition, numerous other crops were affected by flooding. Assessing the full extent of the devastation is expected to take several days.

In response, officials from the Department of Agriculture began conducting field visits early Tuesday. These visits aim to facilitate farmers in reporting their losses for future assistance.

Additionally, teams from the Larnaca District Administration have been deployed to record damages to properties in Xylofagou, necessary for compensation processes. Reports indicate that as many as 25 homes and structures have been impacted by the adverse weather conditions.
