Schools take precautions ahead of Easter bonfires

Relevant News

Schools are removing flammable materials and increasing security measures in preparation for traditional Easter ‘lambratzia’ bonfires, according to the Deputy Director of Secondary Education, Stelios Theophilou.

Schools have cleared yards of benches and other potentially flammable items, and alarm systems are being kept operational. Some schools have hired private security for patrols, particularly those considered high-risk.

Ten schools have recently received approval to install closed-circuit surveillance cameras. Police patrols in school areas will also be increased, and efforts have been made to reinforce fences and improve lighting.

Theophilou said that schools instructed students on the dangers of fireworks, and sought collaboration with police and parents to educate them on risks. Schools have also conducted discreet checks of student belongings before the holiday break.

Local authorities have been asked to refrain from using school grounds for bonfires, and the Fire and Police Departments will be notified if bonfire preparations are observed close to school property.
