Russians in Limassol pay tribute to late Navalny [PHOTOS]

Russians living in Limassol have paid tribute to the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny who died on Friday in an Arctic prison.

Gathering in a vigil, the group assembled outside the Limassol District Administration office, transforming Grigoris Afxentiou Square into a makeshift memorial.

Mourners laid down candles and flowers, while notes bearing messages of defiance against Vladimir Putin adorned the site.

Alexei Navalny, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent domestic foe, died on Friday at the Arctic prison where he was serving a three-decade prison term.

Navalny, 47, fell unconscious and died suddenly after a walk at the “Polar Wolf” penal colony, the prison service said.

The Kremlin has denied involvement in his death and says that Western claims that Putin was responsible for the death are unacceptable.

Navalny rose to prominence more than a decade ago by lampooning the elite class around Putin and voicing allegations of corruption on a vast scale.

Navalny earned admiration from Russia’s disparate opposition for voluntarily returning to Russia in 2021 from Germany, where he had been treated for what Western laboratory tests showed was an attempt to poison him with a nerve agent.

After his death, Navalny’s widow, Yulia said that she would press on with her husband’s fight for a free Russia and called on supporters to battle Putin with greater fury than ever.
