President Christodoulides briefly speaks with Turkish president Erdogan

President Christodoulides engaged in a brief discussion regarding the future trajectory of efforts in Cyprus with the UN Secretary-General and the President of Turkey.

In his meeting with Antonio Guterres, the President raised the issue of Turkish actions in the buffer zone.

Similarly, with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, he emphasized the necessity for progress in Cyprus. President Christodoulides noted that progress in talks would positively impact Euro-Turkish relations.

On his part, President Erdogan is reported to have responded positively to President Christodoulides regarding the need for talks.

Erdogan told N. Christodoulides that he would visit Greece “and then we’ll see.” It is known that the Turkish President will be in Athens next week, attending the Greece-Turkey intergovernmental summit.

According to the government spokesperson, Constantinos Letymbiotis, Christodoulides and Guterres “discussed the latest developments in Agios Dometios.”

Simultaneously, President Christodoulides “raised with the Secretary-General the need for the appointment of an envoy as soon as possible to explore the prospects for resuming negotiations from where they left off.”

As per information from the President’s environment, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, is said to have informed Nicos Christodoulides that he will conclude the envoy matter by next week, with relevant announcements expected.
