Potato farmers warn of protest outside Presidential palace

Relevant News

Potato producers have announced plans for a robust tractor protest outside the Presidential Palace on December 4 if their demand for increased government funding is not met.

In a gathering on Monday night at the open-air amphitheatre in Liopetri, attended by MPs and agricultural organizations, potato farmers decided to seek a meeting with the President of the Republic.

They aim to present the survival challenges facing the sector, impacted by the pandemic and rising costs.

According to a representative of the potato farmers, Andreas Karyos, if the President does not respond to their request for a meeting, they will proceed with a protest outside the Presidential Palace using tractors and other agricultural vehicles.

Other rural sectors facing similar issues are expected to join the demonstration.

Potato producers express dissatisfaction with the outcomes of recent consultations with the Ministry of Agriculture.

They consider the proposed €1.3 million grant suggested by the Minister of Agriculture, subject to the approval of the Ministry of Finance, as insufficient and demeaning.
