Police announce strict checks, awareness week

Relevant News

The Police announce a week of awareness and stricter checks aimed at reducing serious and fatal injuries in road collisions and sensitizing drivers to the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Pan-Cypriot traffic checks will commence from tomorrow, Monday, June 17, 2024, and will continue until Sunday, June 23, 2024.

This campaign will be conducted concurrently at a pan-European level, within the framework of cooperation between the Cyprus Police and the European Traffic Police Network ROADPOL.

Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs remains one of the primary causes of fatal and serious road collisions. Substances such as alcohol and drugs contribute to reduced cognitive and psychological abilities while driving, impairing driver performance and increasing the risk of involvement in a road collision.

It is also highlighted that reckless driving/distraction and driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs constituted the main causes of fatal road collisions during the last triennium (2021-2023), accounting for 16.2% and 23.4%, respectively.

In efforts to prevent and reduce road collisions, the Police continue daily traffic checks aimed at protecting the safety and security of citizens during their movements on the road network.

Special emphasis is always placed on violations that constitute the primary causes of fatal and serious road collisions, such as speeding, use of mobile phones while driving, failure to use seat belts and protective helmets, and driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
