Parliament to commemorate 20 years of EU ascension

With distinguished guests from countries that joined the EU along with Cyprus in 2004 and the presence of the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakidou, a special session on the 20th anniversary of accession will take place on Friday in the Plenary of the House.

The special session will begin at 10 a.m. and is expected to last until 11.

A half-hour later, a special event will be held at the THOC building.

According to information from the House, present will be the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, members of the Council of Ministers, the Diplomatic Corps, and other officials of the Republic.

The President of the House, Annita Demetriou, will address the Assembly, followed by leaders or representatives of the parties and independent Members of Parliament.

The plenary session will be attended by invitees of the President of the House, including the First Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament, Ioannis Plakiotakis, the President of the House of Representatives of Malta, Angelo Farrugia, the Vice President of the Lithuanian Parliament, Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, and the Vice President of the National Assembly of Slovenia, Danijel Krivec.

After the parliamentary session, a large event will be held at THOC where Commissioner Kyriakidou will speak, and all invitees of the President of the House will be present.

Foreign dignitaries, prior to the plenary, will tour along the ceasefire line with the President of the House.

They will then proceed to the House for the special session, followed by the event at THOC, while in the afternoon, they are expected to return to the House to sign the visitors’ book.

The event at THOC will commence with the screening of audiovisual material on “20 years since Cyprus’s accession to the EU.”

Following Demetriou’s speech, a video message from the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, will be shown.

Greetings will follow from the First Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament, Ioannis Plakiotakis, and Commissioner Kyriakidou.

Subsequently, a roundtable discussion titled “Collective Achievements, Common Challenges, and Future Path as EU Member States – The Role of Parliaments” will take place, featuring the President of the House and all invitees from the Parliaments of countries that joined the EU with Cyprus.

The event will conclude with an award ceremony for high school students in the essay competition on “20 years since Cyprus’s accession to the EU.”
