Paphos smart water system in final stages

Relevant News

The implementation of the smart water system in the Municipality of Paphos is in its final stages, with anticipated significant benefits for the municipal authority and residents alike, as it is expected to largely eliminate issues such as water losses or theft.

The preparatory work is deemed to be highly advanced, a fact that is causing satisfaction at the Municipal Hall.

It is highlighted that through the practice of procedures for this aspect of the smart city, the entire system’s operation will become even more secure and deterrent to any fraud.

According to Phileleftheros sources, many entrepreneurs or ordinary citizens have already rushed to rectify irregularities they were practicing for fear of their exposure.

Research conducted by the Municipality reveals that most of the irregularities occurred in pipelines before reaching the water meters, allowing offenders to use water without being charged.

There were also cases of individuals tampering with the meters themselves to record lower amounts of water used. An official source told Phileleftheros that an entire apartment building was identified as consuming as much water as a small house on its own.

The Municipality has been suffering significant revenue losses for years due to these illegal practices, according to the same source.

They stated that if the water consumed in these cases were properly billed, hundreds of thousands of euros in additional revenue would flow into the municipal coffers.

However, responsible authorities at the Paphos Municipal Hall emphasized that the problem is now being tackled decisively and drastically, already contributing to the improvement of the situation.

They expressed confidence that the continuous efforts of the municipal authority towards the implementation of smart water management will contribute to the complete elimination of illegality in the near future.
