New political movement to be launched on Monday -MEP Papadakis

MEP Demetris Papadakis, alongside other political figures, is set to launch a new political movement in Cyprus next Monday.

This development was discussed in a recent meeting with journalists hosted by the European Parliament Office in Cyprus.

Papadakis highlighted that the initiative aims to diverge from traditional party politics in Cyprus, offering a novel approach to addressing societal issues.

The MEP’s vision for the movement is to encourage citizen interventions, advocating for a model of horizontal and open participation, diverging from the hierarchical structure of conventional politics.

Papadakis clarified that the primary focus of this movement is not to contest in the upcoming June European and municipal elections, but he did not exclude the possibility of either an independent candidacy or collaborations with political entities.

This new political formation, according to Papadakis, is open to all who share its social-focused values and approaches, indicating a significant shift towards inclusive and community-driven political engagement in Cyprus.

However, despite aiming for 50% female participation and substantial involvement of young people, these objectives were not met in the preparatory meetings.

“We have not reached the desired level of diversity,” Papadakis remarked.

Papadakis, a former Edek deputy, was ousted from the party in a power struggle with leader Marinos Sizopoulos.

In March 2023, he said that the new movement would come to cover a gap to the centre-left of the island’s political axis.
