March 8 event to protest gender-based violence

Relevant News

People in Cyprus are gearing up to commemorate International Women’s Day on 8 March with a protest march.

The event aims to shed light on the violence faced by women daily, in war and peace.

The organisers highlighted the multifaceted nature of violence against women, stating, “Whether in war or in peace, women experience violence every day. Violence economic, psychological, emotional, sexual violence, physical violence and anything that does not involve consent.”

The situation in Palestine was also brought to the forefront, with the organisers expressing solidarity with Palestinian women. “We couldn’t not mention the inconceivable violence that women are experiencing next to us in Palestine, with the genocide in Gaza that has been going on for five months now. Women are being murdered, women are being raped, women are seeing their children slaughtered before their eyes, women are giving birth in the ruins of hospitals.”

The call to action aligns with the global feminist movement’s efforts from Argentina to Palestine.

The gathering, set for Faneromeni Square on Friday, 8 March at 5:30 pm, will culminate in a march through the city streets.

“We are on the street together, migrant women and Cypriot women, women, queer, trans and non-binary people – all of us who are oppressed daily by patriarchy and heteronormativity,” the organisers said.
