A Paphos resident was arrested last night in connection with a case of breaking into a church, theft and possession of burglary tools.

According to the Paphos Assistant Operations Superintendent Michalis Nikolaou, just after 11 yesterday evening, members of the Polis Chrysochous police station on patrol, spotted a car at the courtyard of the Panayia Chrysovenetiotissa church, in the Latsi area.

They entered the church, which was unlocked and found a man hiding in the pews. He was later identified as a 25 year old from a Polis Chrysochous district community.

He admitted entering the church with intent to steal, claiming that the door was unlocked.

Nikolaou told CNA that the young man managed to steal 13 euros in coins out of the collection box. He admitted to taking the money, with police discovering various tools in the trunk of his car.

He was remanded in custody in connections with the case. Polis CID is investigating.
