The Municipality of Egkomi is conducting investigations into whether the building, in which yesterday’s explosion occurred, met the specifications and held all the planning permissions.
“The Police requested information from the Municipality regarding the building permits.”
According to what Mayor of Egkomi Zacharias Kyriakou stated to philenews, the building received initial approval in 1976 and obtained the final amended permit in 1988 for the construction of a three-story building.
“What we are investigating is whether modifications were made, what those are, and if the changes made to the building received planning permission,” Mr. Kyriakou emphasized.
At the same time, he stressed that we narrowly avoided the worst as the explosion occurred in a densely populated area during rush hour.
The building, according to the Mayor of Egkomi, adjoins a sidewalk where many citizens take walks. “We were very lucky that at that moment no one was passing right outside the building.”
Finally, he noted that the Municipality is awaiting information from the competent authorities conducting investigations into the causes of the explosion.
It is reminded that a 20-year-old is being treated at the Intensive Care Burns Unit of Nicosia General Hospital, who was injured following the explosion, while another person is still hospitalized in a private clinic.
