Judge orders remand for Anthoupoli murder suspects

Relevant News

After a marathon session that began Monday morning and concluded shortly after 01:00 Tuesday morning, District Judge Niovi Petridou issued remand orders for six out of the nine suspects in connection with the attempted murder of Demetris Andronikou in Anthoupoli (23/4).

For the other three, for whom a separate procedure was conducted, she reserved her decision, which she will announce today at noon (12:00, 7/5).

The first six, along with one of the other three suspects (formally rearrested), were already under an 8-day remand.

As for the remaining two, one is a 43-year-old who was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment (9/2021) for the attempted murder of Nikos Rodotheou in Nicosia (26/11/2018).

The other suspect was arrested last Saturday but was released. The Police connected him to the alleged perpetrator, despite his claim of not knowing him.

The evidence presented by the Nicosia CID in the context of its new request for the remand of the nine individuals (aged between 22 and 45) mainly concerns the first suspect, the 45-year-old I.I.

Regarding the latter, based on what was stated by the investigative team led by Yiannis Yiannakou, written testimony emerged regarding his role in relation to the crime.

This written testimony depicts the 45-year-old congratulating the Arab-origin individual (6th suspect) who fired three shots at “Dimitroui,” giving him €10,000 through another person and telling the alleged executor that he would give him €1,500 monthly for life.

It is noted that the 45-year-old was identified by the Police as taking over the leadership of a Nicosia gang since last autumn and that he clashed with the 34-year-old, who was attempting to take control of assets, mainly betting agencies.

The 5th suspect, initially presented by the Nicosia CID as the driver of the scooter-type motorcycle on which the perpetrator rode, according to yesterday’s new judicial procedure, was presented as having a lookout role during the execution of the plan.

The 5th suspect was alleged to have attempted to shoot the 34-year-old on two different occasions, but because he hesitated, according to the Police, the 6th suspect took over the job.

Within the framework of the Police’s request for remand (this time read in full), there is a summary with clear references to the roles each of the main suspects is alleged to have had in the commission of the crime.

Reading her decision after midnight, the Judge said that the Police witness had made a good impression on her, explaining that his testimony was not shaken.
