Investigation launched into allegations of abuse at Limassol institution

Relevant News

Under the scrutiny of law enforcement authorities, a complaint has been filed by a young resident of the Agios Stefanos Foundation in Limassol, alleging verbal and physical abuse by a staff member of the institution.

As reported by Philenews, despite the incident occurring days ago, it was only reported today by the complainant to the Minor Offenses Department of the Limassol Police Directorate.

The complaint is now before the authorities and under investigation. Currently, as Philenews informs, police officers are taking statements from the institution’s caregivers.

Additionally, closed-circuit surveillance systems owned by the institution are expected to be examined.

Regarding the allegations made by the young resident of the institution in her complaint, the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Limassol District Welfare Office, the Cyprus Police, and the Commissioner for Human Rights and Administration have been informed through a relevant letter.

Philenews holds this letter, detailing the alleged events involving the 26-year-old resident in question.

According to the letter, on Sunday, 21/01, between 11:00-11:30 am, at the Agios Stefanos Foundation for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, a abusive incident against the resident xxxxxxxx xxxxx allegedly occurred by a staff member of the institution.

It is alleged that the resident had exhibited aggressive behavior towards the caregivers several hours before the incident, breaking a glass.

Upon being informed of her behavior, the staff member in question reportedly entered the institution’s premises, located the complainant, and abused her physically, according to the complaint.

The letter suggests both verbal and physical violence took place. The incident occurred in the corridor of the first floor, in front of the entrance/exit door leading to the staircase of the institution’s inner courtyard.

Moreover, as indicated in the letter, there are security cameras at that location, which may have recorded the incident.

Philenews contacted the institution to obtain the position of the accused staff member; however, it was reported that they are currently absent from the institution.

When asked for their mobile phone number, it was stated that it cannot be provided due to personal data protection. Philenews is available for the institution to record their perspective on the incident.
