Half lose trust in Church, philenews poll indicates

Relevant News

The scandal at the Monastery of Saint Habakkuk has different aspects.

There is the ethical aspect, which includes sexual allegations, the economic aspect, and also the aspect concerning the exploitation of faith through a “miracle industry” as it has been described.

The extensive research by philenews in collaboration with the company Prime Market Research and Consulting Ltd tried to identify which aspect bothers public opinion the most.

The responses of 2,858 individuals who successfully completed the poll revealed that the “miracle industry” was considered the most serious, followed by the ethical aspect and thirdly, the economic aspect.

Specifically, 48% raised the matter of the “miracle industry,” 36% the ethical aspect, and 12% the economic aspect. Only 4% responded that they had no opinion.

Of course, in relation to the alleged miracles, as it appears from the allegations made in this specific aspect, one can also include the economic dimension.

This is because the so-called “industry” aimed at securing significant financial benefits, as evidenced by the huge amount of 807,000 euros found in the monastery’s safe.

The analysis of the percentages based on age categories is particularly interesting. Notably, in all age groups, the “miracle industry” is considered more serious, except for the 18-24 age group, where the majority considers the ethical aspect more serious.

Specifically, in the 18-24 age group, 53% consider the ethical aspect more serious, 6% the economic aspect, and 34% the “miracle industry.”

In the 25-34 age group, 43% consider the “miracle industry” more serious, 15% the economic aspect, and 37% the ethical aspect.

In the 35-44 age group, 49% consider the “miracle industry” more serious, 13% the economic aspect, and 34% the ethical aspect.

In the 45-54 age group, 48% consider the “miracle industry” more serious, 13% the economic aspect, and 36% the ethical aspect.

In the 55-64 age group, 50% consider the “miracle industry” more serious, 11% the economic aspect, and 36% the ethical aspect.

In the 65+ age group, 59% consider the “miracle industry” more serious, 7% the economic aspect, and 32% the ethical aspect.

One in two has lost trust in the Church

Extremely interesting is the message derived from the philenews survey regarding the question “How much has the scandal shaken your trust in the Church.”

One in two respondents to the poll states that the scandal has shaken their trust in the Church.

Specifically, the 2,858 individuals responded as follows: A lot 35%, Quite a lot 15%, Not so much 11%, Not at all 29%, A little 6%, I have no opinion 4%.

It is noteworthy in this question the attitude of those who responded, based on the age category they belong to.

The smallest percentage of those who claim that their trust in the Church has been shaken belongs to the younger age groups, while, conversely, the largest percentage belongs to the older age groups.

Specifically, in the 18-24 age group, 34% claim that their trust has been shaken.

The percentage increases with age and peaks in the 65+ age group.

Specifically, in the 25-34 age group, it is 49%, in the 35-44 age group it is 46%, in the 45-54 age group it is 48%, in the 55-64 age group it is 53%, and in the 65+ age group it is 62%.

The picture is the opposite for those whose trust has not been shaken at all.

In the 18-24 age group, it is 30%, in the 25-34 age group it is 27%, in the 35-44 age group it is 34%, in the 45-54 age group it is 31%, in the 55-64 age group it drops to 28%, and in the 65+ age group, the lowest percentage appears at 22%.
