One day after Greens MP Alexandra Attalidou announced she was resigning from the party, its leader Charalambos Theopemptou on Tuesday evening also stepped down citing personal reasons.
Theopemptou refused to make further statements as the small party heads for an emergency congress to vote in a new leadership most probably on December 3.
He has made clear he is keeping his parliamentary seat and that he remains a party member.
Outspoken Attalidou had slammed the party for its ‘catastrophic’ position on the Cyprus problem and lack of unity with European greens.
Unlike Theopemptou, she said remaining in the party has come into conflict with her personal values and with what she had promised to those who elected her.
But she has assured the public she would continue to perform her duties in Parliament.
