Cypriot lawyers to be announced in Anastasiades case

Relevant News

The Independent Authority Against Corruption will announce today the names of the three Greek Cypriot lawyers who will assist the Australian expert in investigating allegations against former President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiades.

As Phileleftheros revealed last Saturday, the experienced lawyer, Gabrielle Louise McIntyre, has already arrived in Cyprus and agreed to take on the role of the supervisory inspector for the said complaint.

The information indicates that the Commissioner for Transparency, Haris Poyiatzis, and his close associates at the Independent Authority Against Corruption have already settled on the Greek Cypriot lawyers, and it was just a matter of overcoming an obstacle to formally close the matter and pave the way for the disclosure of their names.

The information suggests that these are lawyers who have the expertise and relevant experience to meet the demands of the role they are called upon to play.

The investigation is expected to proceed at a rapid pace.

Nevertheless, the issue has already been intensely covered by the media in the past 24 hours.

Makarios Drousiotis, in a post on platform “X” last Friday, announced that the former President has taken legal action against him, demanding “the withdrawal of my books, an apology, and compensation.” He added that “I reject his demands,” noting, among other things, that “I consider this move by the former President as an attempt to intimidate me in view of the impending investigation by the Anti-Corruption Authority. There is nothing that can intimidate me. I look forward to being called before the Authority to substantiate what I have recorded in my book.”

Yesterday, there were statements from both Anastasiades and Drousiotis.

The former President, in a written statement, welcomed the appointment of Gabrielle Louise McIntyre to investigate the allegations against him, describing them as false and unsubstantiated claims of a recurring fiction that portrays him as involved in corrupt acts.

Regarding what Makarios Drousiotis mentioned about his intimidation, the former President notes that this is a new finding by himself in light of his revelations, and suggests that the only thing that should intimidate him is the truth and what he falsely and deliberately recorded in his books.

He further states that Makarios Drousiotis should fear deliberate distortions of texts, contradictory and false claims, and self-contradictions, as well as the evidence that will be submitted to the Committee and the Court, which refute one by one his malicious and defamatory lies.

The researcher/journalist also responded with a written statement, stating, among other things: “In his announcement, the former President states that the only thing that should intimidate me is the truth. On the contrary, it is the truth that gives me strength and resilience.”
