Konstantinos Letymbiotis reiterated the government’s determination to combat violence in stadiums.
Speaking on the third program of RIK about the events that led to the decision not to hold yesterday’s cup match between Apollonas and AEL, the Government Spokesperson left open the possibility of taking additional measures.
If the decision not to start the match was political: “According to the current information, the Police could not intervene. When they were informed about the incidents taking place outside the stadium, the police authorities at the time could not intervene because they were not sufficient. We could not risk the safety of those in the stadium, that’s why the match did not take place.”
If there are considerations for additional measures, he said: “We will have a council to proceed; I must say that all of us must rise to the occasion. The President has repeatedly warned us to allow the President and the competent authorities to find solutions. Today, they will be placed under the Minister of Justice and Public Order; he will communicate with the President and the Council of Ministers to evaluate the existing measures as well as additional measures.”
