Relevant News

Five elderly patients being treated at the Nicosia General Hospital with symptoms of sunstroke are in stable condition and are expected to go home over the next few days, health services spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou told CNA.

The protracted heatwave has affected hundreds of people and public hospitals around the country have seen a surge of people seeking ER treatment from thermal exhaustion.

‘A number of people needed admission, while most were treated on the spot and released.

The five elderly patients being treated suffer from long term illnesses, which have taken a toll on their health.

The first sunstroke death of the summer was tragically recorded yesterday, a 91 year old woman who had a high fever and suffered a heart attack at the Nicosia Hospital ER.

She initially recovered following doctors efforts, but sadly suffered a second one a few minutes later, which proved fatal.

Charilaou advised public to remain vigilant, more so children, the elderly and people with underlying long term illnesses.

‘We need to stay indoors, in an airconditioned environment, dress lightly and take in a lot of water’, health services said, renewing an advisory issued a few days ago.
