Firework licenses to be drastically reduced under new bill

Relevant News

The Ministry of Agriculture is drafting legislation to restrict fireworks use after a major wildfire in Limassol’s state forest in April.

Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou and Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis met Thursday to discuss the proposals.

Hartsiotis reportedly stressed the need to prioritise human life, the environment, and animal welfare over recreational fireworks use.

Sources suggest the government is likely to significantly reduce the number of fireworks permits granted for events. Permits may be issued only if temperatures remain below 28 degrees Celsius in residential areas, with additional restrictions to protect lives and property.

“Our focus is on permits issued by the Mines Service for aerial fireworks. These must be issued based on strict criteria,” Panayiotou said. “We are tightening the framework to ensure weather conditions, location, and safety controls are considered.”
