Education Ministry investigates homophobic classroom video

Relevant News

A complaint about a video against LGBTQ+ individuals shown in a classroom to high school seniors during a religious studies lesson, sparked a response from independent parliamentarian and member of Volt Cyprus Alexandra Attalides.

According to reports, the Minister of Education, upon learning of the incident, ordered an investigation.

As Ms. Attalides informed Phileleftheros, the incident occurred in a third-grade class at a high school in Nicosia, and she was informed by parents who expressed their strong dissatisfaction with the homophobic content shown in the classroom.

The video in question featured Greek Bishop of Mesogeas, Nikolaos, who among other things stated that “The purpose is for love to unite souls and bodies.”

To achieve this, he adds, people must be complementary. “Not the same. Two men or two women do not unite. Anatomically, complentality comes from a man and a woman,” notes the bishop in the video, adding that the only organic difference among people is in the reproductive system.

According to protesting parents, the screening of the video was interrupted as the bell rang.

Moreover, Ms. Attalides referred to the incident during a discussion in the Human Rights Committee while examining a matter concerning gender equality.

She further addressed a question to a representative of the Ministry of Education, asking if this is the sexual education offered to students.
