Driver in fatal Kokkinotrimithia crash faces up to four years in prison

Relevant News

A 23-year-old man is facing charges of causing death due to reckless driving in connection with a fatal traffic collision last Friday that claimed the life of 77-year-old Eleni Stavrinidou in Kokkinotrimithia.

Following a review of the case file, the Law Office opted to press charges under Article 210 of the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of four years imprisonment. This article applies to situations where death results from reckless, careless, or dangerous driving.

Police sources, however, previously recommended charging the man with manslaughter under Article 205, which carries a life sentence. This recommendation was based on visual evidence obtained from a camera inside the suspect’s car, according to philenews.

The footage reportedly showed the driver exhibiting unusual behaviour prior to the collision with the pedestrian.

Despite the video evidence, the Law Office determined it wouldn’t be enough to meet the stricter legal requirements for a manslaughter conviction in court.

The case was investigated by the Nicosia Traffic Police and the Nicosia CID.

The 23-year-old’s next court appearance is yet to be scheduled.
