DISY issues statement over Dromolaxia fight between mayor and councillor

Relevant News

Conservative DISY party condemned on Wednesday a reported assault on a Dromolaxia municipal councillor, Savvas Kyriakou, by Mayor Kypros Andronikou.

Kyriakou, a member of DISY, alleged on Tuesday that Andronikou headbutted him during a confrontation at a cafe. The mayor has filed a counter-complaint alleging assault by Kyriakou and his wife.

Andronikou was elected with the backing of the left-wing AKEL party.

This follows an earlier report by Kyriakou of vandalism to his vehicle on Easter Monday. The councillor said he suspects the vandalism was politically motivated.

“The incidents…regarding the vandalism of a car belonging to councillor Kyriakou, as well as the subsequent attack and injury of him and his wife, are absolutely unacceptable and condemnable,” DISY said in a statement.

The party emphasised that such acts “aim to impose a climate of terror” and “do not uphold honour for our political culture.”

DISY called for “strong condemnation from all political forces,” highlighting that “the condemnation of violence must be constant and not selective.”

The statement criticised AKEL for its perceived lack of condemnation towards the mayor.

“Instead of condemning the unacceptable incident, AKEL rushes to build a protective wall around its own Mayor,” DISY said, accusing AKEL of employing “a policy of ‘our own is our own and we protect them.'”

Police are investigating the allegations.
