Cyprus re-elected to the International Maritime Organization Council

Relevant News

Cyprus has been re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the vote conducted in London on Friday, December 1, 2023, during the 33rd General Assembly of the Organization.

Cyprus was a candidate for re-election as one of the 20 members of the Category C Council.

Cyprus was first elected as a member of the IMO Council in Category C in 1987.

Since then, due to its successful and significant contributions within the Council and other organs of the Organization, its active participation in the Organization’s discussions, and its approach to addressing industry challenges, Cyprus has been consistently re-elected in the same category.

Cyprus’s participation in the IMO Council is particularly significant, allowing its involvement in strategic decision-making processes directly impacting maritime affairs, concurrently enhancing Cyprus’s image as an international maritime force.

In statements following the announcement of the voting results, Deputy Minister of Shipping, Ms. Marina Hatzimanolis, remarked, “The re-election of Cyprus to the Council of the International Maritime Organization is a great success for our country, demonstrating its strong position in international maritime affairs. Warm thanks to all my colleagues in the Deputy Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their teamwork and valued collaboration in promoting our candidacy.”
