Cyprus Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos on Monday met in Ramallah with Major General Majed Faraj who heads the General Intelligence Service (GIS) and a member of Fatah’s Revolutionary Council.
And such a meeting is more than significant when it takes place at a time of war, according to Philenews.
The report explains that Nicosia is trying its best to assist with international efforts aiming to de-escalate the bloody Israel-Hamas crisis.
Insiders said Kombos presented and elaborated before the GIS chief Nicosia’s proposal on the crisis, and the logic behind it. And that the proposal received a “warm response” from Faraj.
Officials have made clear that Nicosia is on a hotline with high-ranking European Commission officials, leaders of European countries and of Middle East states so as to make Cyprus a safe maritime humanitarian corridor for the war-torn region.
Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said several European countries are looking to build up a “humanitarian coalition” regarding Gaza and talks were being held with Cyprus and Greece over this.
“Cyprus could serve as a base for humanitarian operations,” Macron had also said.
Moreover, Kombos on Sunday travelled to Amman where he held talks with his Jordanian counterpart.
