Cyprus and Greece sign memorandum for European emergency number

Relevant News

Cyprus and Greece are signing a Memorandum of Understanding today for cooperation on issues related to the implementation of the European Single Emergency Number “112”.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Interior, the memorandum will be signed by the Minister of Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, and the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection of Greece, Vassilis Kikilias.

The signing of the Memorandum follows a bilateral meeting that took place last November in Athens, where it was decided to strengthen Cyprus-Greece cooperation on a wide range of issues, including civil protection, it adds.

According to the announcement, the Memorandum of Understanding “aims to establish the framework of cooperation between the two states for the effective implementation of the communication services provided by ‘112’”.

The services included, among others, are the reception and management of all calls to ‘112’ and the sending of public warning messages in cases of emergencies.

“With the signing of the Memorandum, cooperation between the two countries is established to implement, on the part of the Republic of Cyprus, a modern and reliable civil protection system and timely information for citizens,” it notes.

Cyprus and Greece will develop cooperation for the exchange of best practices and expertise, while jointly organising educational seminars and programmes for the training of their personnel responsible for ‘112’, as well as for informing citizens about the use of ‘112’.

Previously, the Minister of Interior will participate in a discussion on supporting EU member states in adapting to climate change and civil protection policy, within the framework of the Delphi Economic Forum.
