Citizens to protest redevelopment of Larnaca’s Pattichion Park over environmental concerns

Relevant News

The redevelopment of Pattichion Park in Larnaca sparks ongoing reactions, with the Cyprus Wetlands Conservation group announcing a protest event at the site on March 16 at 2:30 p.m.

Dissatisfied citizens are demanding a complete suspension of the works and an Environmental Impact Assessment.

During a meeting on Friday, representatives of the group engaged with Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras, who disclosed that the Game and Fauna Service had greenlit certain works before June in the project area.

Speaking Phileleftheros, Elena Georgiou, a spokesperson for the group, expressed concern over some of the planned works. She stressed, “We demand an independent environmental impact study and a Special Ecological Assessment, knowing what preceded with the Environmental Department in Akamas and other areas. We also call for a revision of the spatial planning.”

Moreover, Georgiou highlighted that the protestors’ discontent would be conveyed to the relevant parliamentary committee convening next Wednesday. She added, “The protest event will also include informing the public about the results of the meeting with the mayor of Larnaca.”

In response, Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras clarified that the Game and Fauna Service’s permission, conveyed via a letter, pertained to works near the Pattichion amphitheatre and other areas not impacting the park’s wildlife.

He said, “We will follow 100% the guidelines of the competent state departments, namely the Game and Fauna Service, the Environmental Department, and the Forestry Department.”
