Christodoulides meets UN Secretary-General in Brussels

Relevant News

The concerns of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can be addressed at the negotiating table, within the agreed framework.

This was emphasized by President Christodoulides to the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, during their meeting yesterday on the sidelines of the European Council in Brussels.

The UN Secretary-General informed the President that he is continuously updated by his envoy on the progress of the talks.

Nikos Christodoulides and António Guterres focused on two issues during their meeting: the Cyprus issue and humanitarian aid to Gaza.

A United Nations statement mentioned that during the meeting, they “exchanged views on the Cyprus issue as well as other regional developments.”

It also stated that the Secretary-General “thanked Cyprus for its decisive role in facilitating the creation of a maritime route for the provision of necessary humanitarian aid to Gaza.”

In a statement, the government spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said that the Secretary-General “reiterated his commitment to the efforts to restart negotiations and expressed his support for the work and efforts of Ms Holguín, with whom he is in constant communication and updated about her contacts and meetings.”

The spokesperson further mentioned that President Christodoulides underscored that his commitment remains steadfast and unchanged in the effort to restart negotiations from where they left off in Crans Montana.

He also noted the constructive stance that the Republic of Cyprus continues to demonstrate to create a suitable positive climate that will contribute to the resumption of negotiations.

President Christodoulides expressed his belief that all concerns of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can be addressed at the negotiating table within the agreed framework of the Bizonal Bicommunal Federation with political equality.

During the meeting, President Christodoulides informed the UN Secretary-General about the ongoing initiative of the Republic of Cyprus “Amalthea” and the expanded meeting held today in Cyprus, with the presence of 36 countries, international organizations, and NGOs.

The maritime corridor, the President added, is a complementary option for providing humanitarian aid, and the aim of the Republic of Cyprus is to further strengthen and intensify the humanitarian aid mission.

The role of the UN, especially the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, President Christodoulides stated, is crucial, and he thanked the Secretary-General for his support towards the initiative.

The Secretary-General acknowledged the value and importance of implementing the initiative and expressed the UN’s support, as well as towards any other channel of humanitarian aid provision.
