Cabinet to review bill extending maternity leave by 4 weeks

Relevant News

Labour Minister Yiannis Panayiotou will present a bill extending maternity leave in Cyprus from 18 to 22 weeks, during a Cabinet session this Wednesday.

This move comes after reaching a unanimous agreement among the key stakeholders during the discussions at the Labour Advisory Council earlier this week.

Panayiotou, reflecting on the comprehensive discussions that spanned various issues at the Council’s meeting, announced the consensus reached on this progressive initiative. He stated,

“This development paves the way for the bill’s immediate presentation to the Cabinet for its forthcoming session, ensuring its rapid progression to the House of Representatives for approval.”

Panayiotou further stressed the significant impact this legislation could have, potentially benefiting around 5,000 working mothers each year “who will be able to dedicate an additional month to their newborns before returning to their jobs.”

Provided it receives approval from the Cabinet, the bill will be sent to the Parliament to be voted into legislation.
