Australian McIntyre to investigate allegations against Anastasiades

Relevant News

The Independent Authority against Corruption has picked the official who will investigate the allegations of corruption against the former President of the Republic.

This person is the experienced lawyer, Gabrielle Louise McIntyre, who came to Cyprus and agreed to investigate the allegations against Nicos Anastasiades expressed in the book “Mafia State” by the journalist/investigator Makarios Drousiotis.

The case was brought before the Authority against Corruption during the last election period by the candidate for the presidency of the Republic, Andreas Mavroyiannis.

The Authority had previously approached Greek lawyers. However, there was difficulty in agreeing with them to take on the role of inspector and investigator in the case.

When Drousiotis informed the Authority last November that his work would be translated into English, the scope of the anti-corruption body was broadened as it became possible to find lawyers from abroad.

In the context of the relevant exploratory contacts outside Cyprus, a proposal for this particular lawyer emerged. After her case was assessed and preliminary contacts were made, a meeting was arranged in Cyprus to agree on the final details and this was done in the past few days.

It should be noted that before the final agreement with the Authority, McIntyre had read the book in English and declared her willingness to take the lead in investigating the case and examining whether corruption or incompatibility issues arise for the former President.

Her remuneration is expected to reach 800 euros for each working day, while her work will be assisted by three Greek Cypriot lawyers, according to Phileleftheros information.

The issues to be investigated include the Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev and what happened in Cyprus after the latter’s divorce.

In the book, the role of a large law firm and its relationship with the then President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, the curious processes of the Parliament for amending legislation, court decisions that favoured the Russian oligarch, and capital transfers were highlighted.
