Attorney General to appeal court decision vindicating Laiki depositors

Relevant News

The Attorney General of the Republic will lodge an appeal against a new decision by the Limassol District Court, regarding compensation claims by depositors due to the 2013 deposit haircut.

The announcement from the Attorney General’s office also states that both decisions in favor of the affected parties were rendered by the same Judge.

The decision aims to vindicate plaintiffs who filed lawsuits claiming they “suffered damage to their property and are therefore entitled to compensation” for losses incurred due to the 2013 deposit haircut at Laiki Bank, following the “Credit and Other Institutions Restructuring Law of 2013.”

The decision of the Limassol District Court, issued by the same Judge on November 8, 2023, which ruled in favor of a plaintiff in a similar case, deviates from the multitude of decisions issued until now, where similar claims were rejected.

The present lawsuit was filed against Laiki Bank, the Central Bank of Cyprus, and the Republic of Cyprus, with the Judge’s decision applying only to the Central Bank of Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus.

After studying the Court’s decision, the Legal Service of the Republic concluded that it should be appealed. A group of Legal Service officials is already preparing the appeal documentation.
