Adults with acne: Tips for letting your skin breathe

Persistent redness and breakouts on the central face, particularly cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin, could be rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin condition.

The National Rosacea Society in the US says the condition can develop at any age, but adults over 30 are more susceptible. Dermatologist Dr Zainab Laftah suggests a genetic link, noting “red cheeks run in families.”

Rosacea’s exact cause remains unknown, but triggers include family history, temperature and sun exposure changes, spicy food, alcohol intake, and stress. Dr Laftah explains it as “dysregulation of the immune response,” leading to inflammation and blood vessel dilation.

Initial management focuses on avoiding triggers like ultraviolet radiation, spicy food, sudden temperature shifts, alcohol, hot beverages, and saunas. Skincare includes balanced-pH cleansers, broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, and regular moisturising. Avoiding irritant products is crucial.

Treatment choices depend on individual symptoms, with the primary goal being reduced inflammation. Consulting a doctor or dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment is recommended.
