9-Year prison sentence imposed in drug trafficking case

Today, the Limassol Criminal Court imposed an immediate 9-year prison sentence on the 53-year-old defendant in the case involving the discovery of 13 kilograms of cannabis in a travel suitcase within the vehicle he was driving on September 10, 2023.

The defendant, who admitted to the charges of possession and possession with intent to supply to others, was found guilty.

The Limassol Criminal Court handed down the 9-year prison sentence today for the charge of possession with intent to supply.

The accused had been under arrest at the Central Prisons since the day of the offense and referral of the case to the Criminal Court.

His immediate admission before the Court and his age were taken into account as mitigating factors, along with his role as an occasional transporter.

Recall that in mid-September, the Limassol Narcotics Unit received information about the trafficking of a large quantity of narcotics.

Shortly after 11:00 am on Sunday, September 10, unit members intercepted the 53-year-old defendant, who was travelling by car in the Polemidia area.

A subsequent search revealed a travel suitcase in the vehicle’s cargo space containing four packages of cannabis with a total weight of approximately 13 kilograms.

Two other individuals had been arrested in connection with the case, but their criminal prosecution has been suspended.
