Today, the signing of the tender contract for the supply and installation of 50 prefabricated Green Kiosks for separate recycling in mountainous and remote areas of all provinces of Cyprus took place.

According to a statement from the Department of Environment, the contract was signed by the Department and the contractor of the project, in the presence of the General Directorate of Development, as it constitutes a milestone in Cyprus’s Recovery and Resilience Plan for 2021-2026.

“The contract will last twenty-five (25) months, with a value of €3,274,000 excluding VAT,” it is stated.

The Green Kiosks will be installed in fifty (50) remote and mountainous local authorities in all the Provinces of Cyprus.

Specifically, there are eight Communities in the Nicosia Province, 16 Communities in the Paphos Province, 14 Communities in the Limassol Province, ten Communities and one Municipality in the Larnaca Province, and one Community in the Famagusta Province.

The installation of the Green Kiosks is expected to be completed by the first half of 2026.

The Green Kiosk serves as a small Recycling Material Sorting Centre, appropriately designed within a modified cargo container, which accepts separated recyclable materials from citizens.

It is added that the aim of the Green Kiosk is to record the quality and quantity of incoming materials, as well as to achieve detailed separation and recovery of high-purity and high-value materials. It also has a human-centric character due to the physical presence of an operator.

According to the announcement, the Green Kiosk will accept paper/cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, and special flows, while additionally materials that can be easily reused without any processing can be disposed of at the Green Kiosk. For example, clothing and footwear, toys, CDs, and books.

As for special flows, these consist of edible fats and oils (cooking oil), lamps, small electrical and electronic devices, as well as household batteries – accumulators.

The Green Kiosks are part of the LIFE IP CYzero WASTE- LIFE20/IPE/CY/000011 Project, “Smart Monitoring and Effective Waste Reduction in Cyprus”.

The design of the Green Kiosk is an original unit of the National Technical University of Athens, as a partner of the project, and has been successfully implemented in remote areas and islands in Greece.
