38-year-old sentenced for eight years over cocaine trafficking

Relevant News

A 38-year-old was a part of a well-organised gang that dealt hard drugs in Limassol, and has been sentenced to eight years in prison by the Limassol Court.

He will also be acting as a witness for the prosecution after serving his sentence.

The Limassol Court sentenced the 38-year-old to eight years in prison on Wednesday (20/03) after he pleaded guilty to charges of possessing and supplying half a kilogram of cocaine to others.

He also pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal stay in the Republic.

The court had previously convicted two other defendants who had also pleaded guilty to the charges.

A fourth defendant, who pleaded not guilty to the same serious charges, is awaiting trial.

The 38-year-old convicted man acted as a drug mule, claiming that he agreed to deliver quantities of cocaine for financial gain, after being prompted by someone who lives in the occupied areas, due to his financial and family problems.

About half a kilogram of cocaine was found in his possession.

He said he met another individual who gave him the controversial quantity to transport in exchange for €500.

As mitigating factors, the court took into account the arguments presented by the defendant’s lawyer, Stelios Alvanis, such as the immediate confession, the clean criminal record, his collaboration with the Police, and the fact that the 38-year-old is willing to testify as a prosecution witness.

In its verdict, the Court noted that, undoubtedly, “the role of the defendant was not peripheral but essential, as he constituted a vital link in the chain of distributing slow death”.

The case came to light after the Drug Squat carried out an operation on 08/10/23 in a house in Limassol, where the three defendants resided.

During the search, among other things, 595 grams of cocaine were found in a bag.
