Limassol’s final stage of upgrade of main sewer collector completed-PHOTOS

The final stage of the upgrade of the main sewer collector along Limassol water front which is the main artery of the coastal city’s sewerage network was completed on Wednesday evening.

The works involved bypassing live sewerage flows and protecting internally the sewer with a polyester liner using robotic systems and state of the art equipment.

The liner provides protection from corrosion and increases -where required – the structural strength of the pipe.

The need for open excavations was almost zero, thus, Limassol was spared the prospect of its sea front road being cut open. This was the practice almost continuously in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

About 8.5km length of sewer and incidental manholes were upgraded commencing January 2019 and completed in February 2021.

Sewer diameter varied from 600mm to 1200mm at a depth of 5m-10m below road level and well under the saline ground water table. The cost amounted to about €8m.

Employer is the Sewerage Board of Limassol-Amathus (SALA), Contractor Cybarco Ltd, specialist sub-contractors George Nikolettos’ Quakeguard Cyprus Ltd and Polish Blejkan, and consulting engineers Stantec & Ioannou.
