Larnaca Airport: Suspect coronavirus case under examination (updated)

Protocols against the coronavirus have been activated at Larnaca Airport after the arrival of a passenger suspected of having contracted the virus, philenews reports.

It said that the passenger had arrived from  China via Moscow.

On landing, the relevant protocols were activated, it added.

The Cyprus News Agency said the passenger was a Chinese woman who lives permanently in Cyprus and had visited China two weeks ago.

It said she was on flight from Moscow when she ran a high temperature and showed other symptoms.

There were another 85 passengers and six crew on the airplane and all have completed the relevant documentation.

Moreover, the crew and passengers who were sitting next to or within two rows of seats in front or behind the woman and others who had also travelled to China will undergo a medical examination as a precaution, the news agency added.

The woman has been taken to a special unit at Nicosia Hospital until the test results are released.

The Republic of Cyprus has set up a task force and introduced screening measures at the airports and ports to screen passengers travelling from China.

There are no direct flights, and authorities have arranged with airlines to inform them if they are carrying passengers who have transited elsewhere on their way to Cyprus.

Signs have also been erected informing the travellers that they must inform authorities if they have been in China in the past 14 days.

Measures are also being implemented at the checkpoints.

Last Monday, President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci were briefed by the bicommunal committee on health on measures being taken to proetct against a coronavirus outbreak in Cyprus and  agreed on the need to increase cooperation so as to take all necessary measures to provide the maximum possible protection to people.
