January dam inflow sets all-time monthly record

The inflow of water into the dams in January has set an all-time record, according to figures published by the Water Development Department on Friday.

Water inflow so far this month had totalled 92,844 million cubic metres (mcm).

The previous monthly record was January 2012 when total inflow into dams was 92,634 mcm, but for the entire month.

That record has already been broken, with 13 days still to go before the end of the month.

Water levels at the dams are now at 48.2% of total capacity — more than four times what they were on the same day last year.

Overall, they have collected 111,124 mcm since October, compared to 44,897 mcm collected in the 12 months of October 2017 to October 2018.

Seven smaller dams have already overflowed — Arminou, Mavrokolymbos, Argaka, Pomos, Ayia Marina Chrysochous, Xyliatos and Kalopanayiotis.

Two Limassol dams are expected to overflow anytime. Germasoyia is already 90% full and authorities expect it to overflow today or tomorrow.

Polemidhia is 82.4% full and Limassol Municipality said that it too is expected to overflow in the next few days.

It urged the public to be particularly careful in visiting the area and the comply with traffic signs to avoid possible problems.
