Greece marks 50th anniversary of student uprising against junta

Relevant News

Demonstrations will take place in big cities of Greece on Friday to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising in 1973 against the military junta then ruling the country.

The demonstrations will take place in central areas or near university campuses with the big one in Athens beginning at the Polytechnic University in Exarchia.

Thousands of people gather to pay their respects at the site of the 1973 Polytechnic Uprising – a glorious political moment in Greece’s modern history. A number of Cypriot students taking part in the uprising were also killed or injured.

The participants march all the way to the U.S. Embassy, on Vasilissis Sofias Street, close to Megaro Moussikis metro station.

All surrounding streets from the US Embassy are heavily barricaded and special measures are in place to protect the Israeli Embassy as well as other possible “targets” due to the war in the Gaza Strip.

Helicopters and drones will be hovering from the air and will transmit images to the police operation centre, according to police.

Clashes between demonstrators and police during the November 17 demonstrations have been observed in the past.
