Interior Minister inspects damage at Ayious Trimithias

The Interior Ministry is offering every possible assistance to residents of Ayios Trimithias whose houses were damaged by a whirlwind on Sunday afternoon, the ministry said

Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides said 40 to 50 houses have been very seriously damaged.

He said the state will be providing shelter to all those families that need it.

Civil Defence and other volunteers were in the area helping, while Electricity Authority crews are working to restore power., he added.

Community leader Yiorgos Iacovou said that afternoon’s whirlwind had caused serious damage.

Police will be patrolling throughout the night to protect houses, he added.

Crews from the Interior Ministry, in cooperation with other state services have started checking premises to determine whether they are dangerous, the Cyprus News Agency said.

As from tomorrow, the damage will be assessed so that financial assistance can be given to those affected.
