Food prices surging uncontrollably, as vegetables see 26.5% monthly rise

In February, the price of fresh vegetables rose by 26.5% compared to January, according to data by the Cyprus Consumers’ Association, based on the Consumer Price Index released on Thursday.

The analysis also found a substantial rise of 15.7% in the general price of vegetables during the same period, while the price of potatoes went up by 6.81%. Fresh fruits saw a smaller increase of 3.78%.

Notable price increases were also observed in meat preparations (7.64%), chocolate (6.97%), and men’s clothing and footwear (6.06%).

At the same time, slight decreases were noted in the price of several products, with the most significant reductions recorded in cutlery and silverware (6.52%) and in edible oils other than olive oil (4.55%). The price of electricity also fell by 2.1% compared to January 2024.

Year-on-year, there is a significant increase in the price of olive oil, which has risen by 54.34%. Similarly, the price of fresh vegetables has also gone up by 26.55% and fresh fruits by 23.36%.

The most notable decreases in February 2024 compared to last year were observed in the prices of edible oils other than olive oil (18.55%), sugar (13.06%), footwear for infants and children (8.25%), and liquid fuels by 8.03%.

It is noted that the comparison was made against January 2023.
