“Special Leave” allowance not to exceed €1,200

Relevant News

Granting of “Special Leave” to parents working in the private sector for the care of children due to suspension of attendance at public and private schools, nursery and child care centres will not exceed €1,200.

The “special leave” will be granted to one of the two parents and can last up to 4 weeks. It will be allocated as follows:

-For a parent with a salary of up to €2.500, a 60% allowance will be paid for the first €1.000, and for the next €1.000 of his/her salary, a 40% allowance will be paid.

-For a parent with a salary of up to €2.500, a 60% allowance will be paid for the first €1.000, and for the next €1.000 of his/her salary, a 40% allowance will be paid.

Phileleftheros has calculated the allowance amount to be received by beneficiaries, based on their monthly salary, which is the following:

-If the monthly salary of an employee is €1,000, then the amount of the allowance received will be €600.

-If an employee is paid €1,200 a month, he/she will receive €680.

– If the monthly salary of an employee is €1,500 then the beneficiary will receive an allowance of €800.

-If the employee’s monthly salary is €1,800, then the allowance will be €920.
-If the employee’s monthly salary is €2,000, the allowance will be €1,000.

-If the employee’s monthly salary is €2,200, then he/she will receive €1,080

-If the employee’s monthly salary is up to €2,500 then the beneficiary will receive €1,200.

Meanwhile, employees whose salaries are over €2,500 monthly are not eligible. This restriction applies because the employee is considered to be of high-income. And the government’s rationale was based on the scenario of two parents bringing home two salaries.

Therefore, a parent with a salary of over €2,500 does not receive the allowance, but the other one will continue to bring income to the family. It is only logical to assume that the parent opting for “special leave” is the one receiving the lower salary, Phileleftheros reports.

At the same time, in the case of single parent families the rate of payment of the allowance is higher and varies between 70% and 50% respectively. This won’t exceed €1,450.

Ministry of Labour “special leave” applications will be ready by Thursday, the latest. And efforts are made for these to be submitted electronically.

There are a number of criteria and conditions which should be met for the above “special leave” allowance.
