The Minister of Labour, Yannis Panayiotou on Wednesday announced that the national minimum wage is set to rise to one thousand euros gross, after six months of employment in the same company.

The current minimum is 940 euros gross.

The government also decided to increase the national minimum wage at the time of employment to 890 euros gross. The current amount is 885 euros gross.

The wage hike will be enforced by an executive decree.

“The government supports the gradual improvement of the adequacy of workers’ remuneration in line with the potential of the economy. The focus of the targeted policies is on the lowest paid workers, who are protected by government decrees, with the ultimate aim of limiting their exposure to social exclusion,” the Minister said.

He added that 25,000 workers will benefit from the hike.

The government did not accept the demand of the trade unions for an hourly minimum wage.
