In a statement today, Interior Minister Nikos Nouris referred to the draft bills regarding the reform of Local Administration that had been discussed for years both in Parliament and with social partners.
In its last session, the Parliament decided to include in the text of the draft bill a provision providing for a referendum at a local level after the said draft bill is approved and turns into a law.
The Interior Ministry disagreed with the said provision and on 1 February sent a letter to the Attorney General requesting his legal opinion.
As Nouris said, the Attorney General said that referenda regarding the reforms of the Local Self-Administration in Cyprus are not possible after the said draft bill is approved and becomes a law because something like that would dispute the implementations of all the provisions of the said law.
The Interior Minister added, that respecting the position of the majority of the parties, he intends to suggest a Pan-Cypriot referendum on the reform of Local Self Administration, together with the parliamentary elections, on 30 May.
