The Cyprus Employers Federation (OEB) has sent out letters to EU officials calling for the seat of the European Labour Authority whose operation is expected to commence within 2019 to be in Cyprus.
Slovakia is also interested in the seat of ELA whose aim is to support Member States in implementing EU legislation in the areas of cross-border labour mobility and social security coordination.
ELA’s seat location is something to be decided by common agreement between the representatives of the Member States. This was an issue discussed during this week’s Med-7 Summit in Nicosia as well.
INSIDER was informed that OEB took the initiative to send three letters to relevant EU institutions, that is to European Council President Donald Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila whose country currently holds the Union’s six-month rotating presidency.
At the same time, a letter has been sent to Minister of Labour Zeta Emilianides with a notification to Foreign Minister Nicos Christodoulides explaining the reasons why OEB wants the establishment of ELA in Cyprus.
In the letter, OEB notes that the EU trend in recent years is to create various European authorities within the region so as to strengthen Member States as well as the concept of European integration.
OEB refers to a number of examples, such as Frontex whose seat was established in Poland in 2016, eu-LISA in Estonia in 2012, ACER in Slovenia in 2011, EASO in Malta in 2011, EIT in Hungary in 2010 and BEREC in Latvia in 2010. However, the Federation notes, no European body is seated in Cyprus.
The letters sent to the EU officials were signed by both OEB Chairman Georgios Petrou and Director General Michael Antoniou and also stress that with the establishment and operation of such a body in Cyprus some 150 positions will open. And this will help significantly a small country like Cyprus which is still struggling to cope with the recent financial crisis.
