Coronavirus: political parties preparing measures to support companies, workers

Relevant News

Just when the government is ready with the handful of bills outlining support measures to companies and employees to address the fallout from the coronavirus outbreak, political parties are drafting their own legislative proposals, Phileleftheros reports.

Following Cabinet approval, fours bills were sent to parties late on Wednesday outlining the measures along with an additional budget of €302 million. The bills concerning support to employees will be in force from March 16 to May 16.

At the same time, parties are preparing their own legislative proposals to be debated before Friday’s  plenary.

Insiders said if the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) refuses to accept a reduction in electricity prices, then Opposition parties Akel and Diko will table a proposal for reduced VAT on electricity bills.

Akel is also preparing proposals for new regulations on rents and foreclosures. And Diko is considering an amendment enabling employers forced to fire people to make use of government plans.

In the meantime, despite an announced three-month suspension of foreclosures by banks, opposition socialist Edek will submit a proposal to freeze them until the year’s end.

And the Greens, also in opposition, will propose the abolition of the €350 annual fee for small businesses before the plenary.

They will also submit a proposal to change the definition of non-performing loans. That is, a loan will be considered to be non-performing after 120 days instead of 90 days which is the policy today.
