Authorities see 20% drop in tourists from Germany because of fewer seats

Tourism arrivals from Germany in 2019 are expected to be down 20% on the previous year  primarily due to fewer airline seats following the closure of airline companies and not because of lower interest, the deputy ministry of tourism said on Friday.

Its announcement followed a visit of the deputy minister Savvas Perdios to Germany and Austria for talks with tour operators and airline companies in the two countries.

It said that interest in Cyprus remains keen and tour operators and airline companies are working on the number of seats to make available for Cyprus in 2020. Final decisions are expected towards the end of the summer.

The deputy ministry said that German and Austrian tourists are satisfied with the tourism product offered by Cyprus, though prices are slightly higher than neighbouring destinations.

In 2018, Germany was Cyprus third largest tourism market after the UK and Russia with some 190,000 visitors.
