Cyprus has one of the lowest rates of electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the European Union, according to Eurostat data. At just 0.14% of the total car fleet in 2022, the island nation lags far behind the EU average.
However, there are signs of progress. EV ownership has been gradually increasing, doubling in 2022 compared to 2021. This trend mirrors a broader EU push towards electric mobility.
Cyprus’ car ownership rate remained relatively stable in 2022 at 0.65 cars per inhabitant, close to the EU average of 0.56. This suggests potential for further EV adoption as car ownership remains high.
Looking across the EU, a stark contrast emerges. Flevoland, Netherlands boasts the highest EV ownership rate at 12.8%, while some regions still hover close to zero.
While Cyprus lags, the upward trend in EV ownership offers a glimmer of hope. Incentives and infrastructure development will likely be crucial to accelerate this shift.
High car ownership not the only story
The Eurostat data also sheds light on broader car ownership trends.
While Cyprus has a mid-range car ownership rate, significant variations exist across the EU. The Aosta Valley in Italy tops the list with a staggering 2.34 vehicles per inhabitant, likely influenced by favourable tax regulations.
Conversely, the French overseas department of Mayotte has the lowest rate at just 0.08 vehicles per inhabitant.
