The Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) increased by 76% the Public Service Obligation levy of the Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) paid by consumers through their electricity consumption bills received from EAC, stated Marios Drousiotis, President of the Consumers Association.
Drousiotis explained that this levy is paid by consumers to subsidize vulnerable groups, emphasizing that the Association is not against subsidizing vulnerable groups, “but the levy doubled without any justification,” he said.
According to him, the levy was €0.00058/kWh following a decision by CERA in May 2023, effective from June of the same year.
However, with a new decision on December 8, 2023, the levy increases to €0.00102/kWh effective from January 2024.
In accordance with CERA’s decision on “Pricing for the Recovery of Public Service Obligation Costs (PSOC)”, the members of the Senior Management decided to approve the pricing for the recovery of PSOC costs at €0.00102/kWh.
They also decided to implement the revised PSOC pricing through the electricity bills of all Electricity Suppliers to final customers for monthly consumers, whose meter readings will be taken at the end of January 2024, and for bi-monthly consumers, whose meter readings will begin on January 1, 2024.
This decision is posted on CERA’s website within the framework of “full transparency and informing all stakeholders.
